Google has developed a new algorithm for JPEG which decreases the size of file by about 35%. This means that the image can be improved while keeping its image quality constant. Google has said that the new JPEG update is compatible with existing browsers, devices , photo editing applications as well as the JPEG standard.

There has always been a need of compressing JPEG’s while retaining as much quality as possible. Picture compression is a commonly used tool but the flip point which has resulted in either retaining the quality or decreasing it.

Google has said that the algorithm is called Guetzli. It can reduce the JPEG’s file size by as much as 35% while it will retain the visual quality or the image quality can be considerably improved while keeping the file size the same.

According to Google, the visual quality of the JPEG images is directly related to the process. The algorithm Guetzli has multi stage compression process. It includes the color space transform , the discrete transformation and the quantization. These are all technical jargon but the resulting end of these multi processes is that the image quality is retained with the reduction in size.
