The Global e-commerce Giant Alibaba Group holding Ltd is looking at the Country with profound interest spurred on the back of robust growth in the local e-commerce sector. Alibaba group was quoted as saying that they are “closely monitoring the e-commerce sector in Pakistan” . Alibaba is the dominant figure in China’s online commerce sector as it holds more than 90% of consumer-consumer market through it’s Taobao platform secondly the Tmall platform has over half of the business-consumer transactions.

It is important to mention here that Alibaba group has formally launched it’s subsidiary UCWeb last year which launched its UC browser app in Pakistan to improve the user’s web experience. AliExpress is looking to be a success already as according to industry insiders it receives 15,000 orders per day from Pakistan.

According to stats UC Browser has over 420 Million users Worldwide while Alibaba group had a consolidated revenue of $ 15.69 billion and the active annual users of its retail marketplaces have over 423 Million active annual buyers. It has presence in over 190 Countries Worldwide and is known as the “Amazon of the east”. 

Alibaba’s Mobile Business group Head of Marketing in Emerging Markets Andrea Huang has said “UCWeb has acquired 25.3% market share in Pakistan which comes third after Google Chrome and Firefox” which is a significant piece of the pie. Huang also said that “We have decided to fully market our product here as we are successfully leading in China, India & Indonesia with a global customer base of 420 million active users.

She added that “We are investing in our product to keep finding the demand and better services. At present , we don’t have a formal office in Pakistan , but once we expand out of Lahore , Karachi and Islamabad , we will hire a team and open up offices in Pakistan. The immense growth in 3G and 4G connections in Pakistan , coupled with a population of over 190 Million , was the biggest attraction for formally launching the group’s product”.
